My top 20 albums of all time.

Image
Ones taste in music can change drastically over a prolonged period of time. Certain artists or bands that were once favoured can become a mere afterthought in your personal music directory given a change in preference of genre or just due to sheer realisation. All music fans can recall listening to some pretty questionable music throughout their childhood. Yet certain recordings will stay with you forever. Albums that are simply timeless. Albums that have an emotional effect on you as a listener. Albums that are just truly iconic. So without further a do, the following list consists of my personal top 20 albums of all time, at the time of writing, of course. As anyone would find when compiling a similar list, it is pretty difficult to narrow down so many outstanding compilations, therefore I have included some honorable mentions that didn't quite make the cut: LCD Soundsytem- Sound Of Silver The XX- xx Jamie T- Panic Prevention Kanye West- Late Registration Wolf Alice- Your L...

Bands you should be listening to #6: Asylums

Image
In this day and age, it is becoming worryingly more common for talented guitar bands to slip under the radar as a variety of other genres become increasingly more popular. Although the genre might appear to be on its knees, there are a handful of bands currently flying the flag for guitar bands up and down the country, however, not to the extent that was seen 10 or 20 years ago. Even so, there are masses of truly fantastic bands around that are acting as a saving grace for the genre. The kind of bands that you stumble across on Spotify when at a loose end and wonder why they're not 10 times as popular as they are. The kind of bands that have you hooked after 30 seconds of one song. The kind of bands that make you want a book a ticket to one of their shows imminently. A prime example being Southend four-piece- Asylums. Consisting of Luke Branch on vocals and guitar, Jazz Miell on guitar, Michael Webster on bass and Henry Tyler on drums, Asylums are responsible for writin...

Bands you should be listening to #5: Gerry Cinnamon

Image
Although initially starting this blog with the idea of writing predominantly about up and coming bands and allowing them to reach a wider audience in the process, it is near impossible to ignore the sheer talent and beautiful sound of Scottish singer songwriter- Gerry Cinnamon. Thanks due in part to my weekly release radar on Spotify, I stumbled across arguably Cinnamon's best song 'Sometimes'. I have been hooked ever since, playing the song on repeat, alongside many other songs from his simply outstanding recently released debut album- Erratic Cinematic. I was amazed at how much I related to the  heartfelt lyrics of coming of age song 'Sometimes', and I believe there are masses of  other 20 year old lads that would too. Also taking notice to the raw singer/songwriter vibe, gritty Scottish vocals and passionate meaning behind each song, this is when I knew I'd found an absolute treasure in Gerry Cinnamon. Cinnamon, born in Castlemilk, Glasgow, has always ...

Bands you should be listening to #4: The Velvet Hands

Image
Generally speaking, Cornwall is famous for its stunning coastline, excellent surfing conditions, and of course, it's delightful Cornish pasties. Yet, one thing that Cornwall may not be heavily associated with, is the vibrant music scene which helped young four-piece 'The Velvet Hands' throughout their early years. On the back of a run supporting VANT at three intimate venues across the west country, the highly regarded garage rock band kindly took some time out of their busy schedules to give us an interesting insight into their busy, yet exciting lives as an up and coming band. Although now living in London, the lads owe a lot their home county and insist that Cornwall has a really vibrant music scene which inspired them a lot when starting out. "It's a really close knit scene and everyone is always very positive about each others music which gives you a lot of confidence as a new band." Moving away from the peacefulness and tranquility of Cornwa...

Bands you should be listening to #3: LIFE

Image
As an obvious fan of indie music, unsigned Hull punk four-piece 'LIFE' possess every quality I love in a band. They are politically charged, gritty, energetic, incredible live, absolutely fucking mental, and most importantly, produce great music. It is fair to say that there are numerous bands currently on the scene who possess a strong opinion on current affairs and political happenings. Like VANT, LIFE make the best of a bad situation, and tackle the pandemonium within a number of their songs from their absurdly impressive debut album 'Sugar God'. LIFE act as a voice for every young musician in the country, by using their ever growing reputation as a platform to get their important message across. The song 'In Your Hands' possesses a particularly powerful message, which I can only presume was written in homage to Jeremy Corbyn's recent Labour campaign. Their live shows are wild, lively and somewhat aggressive. The sheer showmanship of full t...

Bands you should be listening to #2: Jordan Allen

Image
Judging by the name alone, Jordan Allen could easily be mistaken for a solo artist, however they are an up and coming band making waves on the indie circuit, ironically fronted by lead vocalist Jordan Allen. Although not the most imaginative of names, Jordan Allen's infectious lyrics, gritty instrumentals and catchy hooks make them one of the most exciting young bands to have risen from obscurity in the last year.  Although from Westhoughton, a town 13 miles north west of Manchester, you can easily draw similarities between them and some of the most successful bands to have come from from the city that is synonymous with creating some of the best bands of all time. Leadman Jordan's vocals sound typically 'Mancunian' and the band possesses a similar sound to the one that made The Courteeners the success that they are today, whilst also retaining an element of exclusivity and uniqueness in their own sound.  With only 7 songs currently available on Spotify, it w...

Bands you should be listening to #1: VANT

Image
In recent years, it is fair to say that it has become increasingly less popular for bands to possess such a strong opinion on current affairs and political incorrectness. London four piece alternative/punk band 'VANT', equipped with their catchy choruses, incredible guitar riffs and pulsating drum beats, tackle ideological and political issues through their passionate lyrics. Accompanied with their sheer energy and electricity when playing their live sets, it makes for an utterly incredible show. What makes VANT such an intriguing band is that even if you do not agree with their political ideologies and the controversial outlook within their lyrics, you can still find yourself thoroughly enjoying their music. Their debut album 'Dumb Blood' is absolutely rammed with mind-blowing instrumentals, gritty vocals, slow build ups and heavy drops. The song 'The Answer' captures all of these factors to perfection and makes for a captivating live song that fans regula...
